"Caver-Bowl" Sunday

Pete and I went on a duo trip to Cavalry Cave down on Ft. Huachuca on Super Bowl Sunday, seeing as how neither of us knew who were playing, it seemed as good a day as any to go caving.

The cave has a nice hike up about 500 feet change in elevation, and I was glad to find the entrance with the aid of modern navigation aids like satellites, otherwise the dead tree Pete and I were looking for just wasn't cutting it.

Great Cave!! Lots of photo-worthy rooms and formations, not to mention the calvary signatures that are over 100 years old in the cave.  Highly decorated and highly recommended for a return trip.

After finding a new 'loop' route in the cave, Pete and I fished out the register, which was an ammo can that had slid down into a hole that only my 4 year old could fit in.  I rigged a huge 'fish hook' by zip-tying a carabeaner open and tying it to some webbing and literally fishing it out by hooking the end handle.  The last signature was sometime in 2004, if I remember correctly.

After the return down the mountain from the hike of horror, which pales in comparison to the Stratton Death March, we went out the west gate toward Sonoita and made a quick stop at Black Oak Cemetary, which still has several active digs in place.  Neat little cave, in a real wierd spot.

Good times on this day, Go Colts!  I hear they won.
