Fort Stanton Cave. Third largest in New Mexico. That alone says something. I would say we did about a 4 mile round trip route last Sunday- "we" being Greyspider, Alec Fine-Hardesty (10 years old), Paul Whitby, and Mr. Bruce (Bob) Lynn. I stopped hurting around Thursday!!! The passages and rooms in FSC are VERY large, with 100 foot and taller ceilings throughout. But not in the Crystal Crawl and Hell Hole sections! We did over 1000 feet each way on hands and knees to pay for the wide open spaces beyond. If it weren't for the incredible yellow, orange, blue, and purple velvet formations and one of a kind oddball speleothems in the back of the cave, it would be considered masochistic. My grandson, Alec, had never done a trip longer than 2-3 hours. This was a 9 hour cavers dream and he ate it up. He didn't miss letting us know we were dragging on the last crawl! We seemed to have picked a perfect weekend for the camping as well- 78 degrees or so in the sunlight hours, cold but not brutal at night and no wind. To top it off, because of the prior abundant rain, we had plenty of vegetation, and our campground was covered in mint plants. I kid you not- even my sleeping bag was on a floor of mint. What a great smell for the weekend. It almost covered up our stench when we emerged from the trek! Along the hike we noticed a couple of new digs in this cave which keeps adding miles every year lately. One tunnel was a belly crawl that I checked out for about forty feet, with a ceiling of short straws to let you know this wasn't a dud. If I lived a little closer I would sure like to get in on those discoveries. Anyway. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you haven't done it. It's amazingly beautuful and brutal in a sick sort of way. GOTTA LOVE IT!! It's pretty easy to navigate, the route is marked with reflective markers every so often so there doesn't have to be a continuous flagged trail, with only a couple of tricky moves (on Three Way Hill), and it's open from April to October. |
